Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), commonly known as 'tapping', also described as psychological acupressure, is used to address a wide range of emotional and physical issues. Here are some areas where EFT has been found to be helpful:
1. Emotional Health
Anxiety and Stress: EFT can help reduce feelings of anxiety by tapping on specific points while focusing on the anxiety-triggering thought or event. Cortisol (stress hormone) has been shown to reduce after one EFT session.
Depression: Some people use EFT to alleviate symptoms of depression, improving mood and emotional stability.
Trauma and PTSD: EFT has been used to help individuals process and reduce symptoms related to traumatic experiences and PTSD.
Phobias: It can assist in reducing fear and anxiety associated with specific phobias, such as fear of flying, heights, or spiders.
2. Physical Health
Chronic Pain: EFT has been used to manage chronic pain conditions, such as fibromyalgia, arthritis, and migraines, often reducing pain levels. It is recognised by some NHS services who incorporate EFT into pain management programmes.
Headaches: Many people use EFT to alleviate headaches and migraines.
Autoimmune Disorders: EFT can help manage the stress and emotional factors associated with autoimmune conditions.
Immune Function can be improved
3. Behavioural and Addictive Issues
Addictions: EFT can be part of a comprehensive approach to overcoming addictions, including smoking, alcohol, and other substances.
Weight Loss: EFT can help address emotional eating and support healthy weight loss by reducing cravings and emotional triggers.
4. Performance Enhancement
Sports Performance: Athletes use EFT to improve focus, reduce performance anxiety, and enhance overall performance.
Academic and Work Performance: EFT can help reduce anxiety related to exams, presentations, or job performance, leading to better outcomes.
5. Relationship Issues
Interpersonal Conflicts: EFT can help individuals manage emotions related to conflicts in personal and professional relationships.
Self-Esteem and Confidence: It can boost self-esteem and confidence by addressing underlying negative beliefs and emotions.
6. Personal Development
Goal Setting and Achievement: EFT can support individuals in setting and achieving personal goals by reducing self-doubt and enhancing motivation.
Spiritual Growth: Some use EFT as part of their spiritual practices to release emotional blocks and achieve greater inner peace.
7. Miscellaneous Applications
Sleep Issues: EFT can help improve sleep by reducing anxiety and stress that interfere with restful sleep.
Grief and Loss: It can support individuals coping with grief and loss, helping them process their emotions and find peace.
How EFT Works
EFT involves tapping on specific acupressure points on the (mainly upper) body while focusing on a particular issue or emotion. This combination of physical stimulation and psychological focus is believed to help release emotional blocks, reduce stress, and promote healing. I find it can be really helpful to support clients who present in my nutrition clinic with a myriad of health issues; including digestive/gut , hormonal and energy issues. There is a recognised connection between the gut and our brain (the gut is known as the 'second brain'). Many gut issues benefit hugely from emotional and stress support.
Supporting our innate ability to heal
While EFT is not a replacement for traditional medical treatments, it can be a valuable complementary therapy for a variety of emotional, psychological, and physical issues.
By using EFT, we can reconnect with our innate sense of mental and physical healing and wellbeing. I have witnessed first hand myself, and with clients the amazing and positive effects of EFT, I love to see the emotional and mental shifts that can happen in a very short space of time.
